The Cuyabeno Wildlife Production Reserve is a tropical rainforest and a protected wildlife area located in northeastern Ecuador, in the provinces of Sucumbíos and Orellana. It was created on July 26, 1979, and covers an area of 6,034 km². The reserve is a complex mix of lagoons and flooded forests. It is considered one of the most biodiverse places in the world, along with Yasuní National Park.

Paddling through an environment full of wildlife is truly the ultimate experience. No engine noise will prevent you from quietly approaching the fauna living in the forest. You will connect, like indigenous communities, with the harmony and tranquility of this ecosystem.

Without a doubt, this is a unique adventure, and you will have the opportunity to see and observe much more than during a traditional motorized canoe tour.

This tour requires a minimum of two participants, excellent physical condition, and a strong sense of adventure… We will camp along the riverbanks and paddle toward Peru on a journey of approximately 100 km to Puerto Montúfar.

Itinerary :

Day 1:
Welcome upon arrival at the Cuyabeno River bridge for departure by motorized canoe to our camp. Breakfast and rest while the guide prepares the equipment for the following day’s paddling excursion. Lunch and a short afternoon walk along the Ceibo trail, where we can observe flora with centuries-old trees and various species of monkeys and birds, among others… Dinner and overnight in cabins.

Day 2:
After a light breakfast, we will board the canoes that we will use over the next few days to travel through the reserve. We will begin descending the Cuyabeno River to Paso del Tigre, where we will take a short hike of about two hours, with the possibility of spotting peccaries. Dinner and overnight at the first campsite.

Day 3:
(Optional: early morning birdwatching hikes available upon request.) After breakfast, we will set off in our canoe, enjoying the magnificent flora and fauna. We will continue our journey to Laguna Grande, a natural habitat for several species such as pink and gray dolphins, river turtles, and the elusive anaconda.

We will find a suitable place for lunch and a short rest, then continue our journey through Cuyabeno to the Siona community of Puerto Bolívar, where we can learn about their customs and experience their way of preparing food by participating in the making of cassava bread (casabe).

We will then continue downstream and set up camp for the night. Dinner and overnight in tents.

Day 4:
We will navigate along the river to Puerto Montúfar, where we will take a short hike in this nearly untouched part of Cuyabeno, followed by birdwatching along the river.

Day 5:
Breakfast, followed by navigation along the Cuyabeno River to Aguas Negras, a beautiful blackwater river that hosts a wide variety of exotic and unique bird species found nowhere else in the world. We will enjoy jungle hikes and learn more about this unique ecosystem with our guide. Overnight in Aguas Negras. Dinner and overnight in tents.

Day 6:
On the final day, we will have an early breakfast before beginning the return journey to the lodge. We will travel by motorized canoe, staying alert to observe wildlife along the way. We will depart with enough time to arrive at the Cuyabeno bridge at 11:00 a.m. End of the program.

Formalities:
Passport valid for at least 6 months after your return date. No visa is currently required.

Practical advice:
For this trip, it is recommended to bring a backpack rather than a hard suitcase to carry your belongings.

Note:
A stay in the Amazon remains a true adventure with possible unforeseen events. To avoid connection issues, we recommend not scheduling an international flight or a Galápagos cruise the day before or after your jungle stay.
