3 days / 2 nights program

It is recommended to allow 2 to 3 days in Ecuador for gradual acclimatization; hikes take place between 3,900 and 4,800 meters in altitude.

Meals included are indicated as follows:
B: Breakfast / L: Lunch / D: Dinner

Day 1

Departure from Quito by private vehicle to the village of Lloa. Drive up to 4,000 meters in altitude.

Approximately 2-hour hike to the Pichincha refuge, built by Civil Defense at 4,550 meters. Picnic lunch during the hike. Continue along the crater rim to the summit (4,784 m) and observe the volcano’s constant activity (fumaroles). Magnificent views over the crater. Dinner and overnight in a lodge.

Meals: L (picnic) – D
Walking time: 4 hours
Terrain: dirt trails and rocky sections at higher altitude, with occasional snow
Elevation gain: 300 to 780 meters (flexible)

Day 2

After breakfast, departure by private vehicle to Cotopaxi National Park and ascent of the central peak of Mount Rumiñahui (4,721 m), following the trail from Limpiopungo Lagoon. Panoramic views over the national park. Picnic lunch during the hike. Dinner and overnight in a lodge.

Meals: B – L (picnic) – D
Walking time: approximately 7 hours
Terrain: sandy trails and rocky sections at higher altitude, with occasional snow
Elevation gain: 900 meters

Day 3

Early departure to the village of El Chaupi. Drive up to La Virgen (3,900 m), starting point of a 3-hour hike to the Illiniza Norte refuge (4,700 m).

Begin the ascent following the crater ridge over volcanic ash and then rock. The approach to the summit involves loose rock and requires some experience; progression may be exposed to wind and possible snowfall (5,126 m). Snack during the ascent. Descent via the northeast flank back to the refuge and then down to the valley. Return to Quito in the evening.

Walking / climbing time: 9 to 10 hours
Terrain: volcanic ash, rocks, and possible snow
Elevation gain: 1,220 meters

Note

This program can also be done in 4 days / 3 nights, with the ascent of Illiniza Norte split over 2 days (overnight at the refuge at 4,750 m). This allows for better acclimatization for those planning to climb Cayambe, Cotopaxi, or Chimborazo afterward, and also breaks up the Illiniza Norte ascent, avoiding a continuous 9-hour hike and climb.
