Climbing of a volcano (5790 m) – Acclimatization required

Cayambe Volcano, the third highest peak in Ecuador (5,790 m), is located north of Quito in the Eastern Cordillera. Its ascent is a good alternative since this volcano is not very crowded. You should plan for approximately 9 hours of hiking (refuge – summit – refuge).
No specific high-mountain technical knowledge is required; however, participants must have excellent acclimatization and good physical condition.
Itinerary :
Day 1:
Departure at 10:00 a.m. from Quito by private vehicle toward Cayambe and then to the refuge located at 4,700 m. Picnic lunch at the refuge.
In the afternoon, ice practice to test the equipment and assess each participant’s level. The guide will explain the use of technical equipment and glacier travel techniques using this gear (helmet, harness, rope, crampons, and ice axe).
Safety and rescue techniques will be explained according to high-mountain safety standards. The guide will also evaluate each participant’s level in order to form the most suitable rope teams.
Return to the refuge, followed by dinner and rest in the dormitory provided.
Day 2:
Wake-up around midnight to eat and prepare personal and technical equipment. The ascent will begin at approximately 1:00 a.m.. Roping up will take place on the glacier about 200 meters higher.
The ascent will take 6 to 8 hours, and the descent approximately 3 hours. Return to the refuge to collect extra gear and drive back to Quito late in the morning.
Walking time: approximately 8 to 9 hours
Type of terrain: sand trails, rocky paths, occasional snow, and glacier
Elevation gain: 1,090 meters

Precautions and advice:
A 5 to 7-day acclimatization period in the Andes is recommended before attempting this ascent. Our team will be happy to advise you on the different hikes available.

Gloves and waterproof over-gloves
Technical jacket and over-pants
Headlamp
Glacier sunglasses (protection level 3 or 4)
Mountaineering boots with a thermal inner boot, suitable for temperatures below –10 °C to –20 °C, compatible with semi-automatic crampons, or rigid shell boots (older models). For greater comfort during the ascent, it is preferable to use your own boots; however, it is also possible to rent them locally (maximum size 47). If you need to rent equipment in Quito, we will assist you with the process.
For issues related to altitude sickness, consult your doctor regarding the use of Diamox.
