Located in Yasuní National Park, an important UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Napo Wildlife Center (NWC) is one of the most comfortable and captivating places in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
NWC Lodge is situated on the shores of Lake Añangucocha, within the territory of the Añangu Quichua community.
Thanks to this initiative, the community preserves its traditions by sharing its wonderful world with us.
Itinerary :
Day 1:
30-minute flight from Quito to Coca, crossing the Eastern Andes. Arrival in Coca (Francisco de Orellana) mid-morning. After airport procedures, transfer by local bus or taxi from the airport to the Napo River port.
Boarding comfortable motorized canoes. The journey lasts approximately two and a half hours, during which a picnic lunch is provided.
During the transfer to the lodge, birds such as herons, kingfishers, river gulls, and other species can be observed. Upon arrival at the NWC entry port, at the confluence of the Napo and Añanguyacu rivers, a change of boat is required. The second part of the journey lasts about one and a half hours and is done in quillas (small paddle canoes), operated by community guides and their assistants.
The paddle journey follows a narrow Amazonian river leading to the lagoon and the Napo Wildlife Center. It is an excellent introduction to this tropical rainforest. There are good chances of seeing monkeys, toucans, and macaws.
In the evening, after dinner, there is the possibility of canoeing around the lagoon in search of nocturnal wildlife and, above all, listening to the sounds of these magical places.
Day 2:
Early departure to reach the clay licks, located just one hour from the lodge. Numerous parrots arrive between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. to feed on mineral-rich clay deposited in thin layers on the walls or on the ground.
After a 30-minute walk through the forest, visit to the parakeet clay lick; they usually begin their activity between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. It is possible to observe around 11 species of parrots and parakeets. The visit depends on weather conditions, although it is generally successful.
Lunch at the Interpretation Center to learn about Kichwa culture, their handicrafts, traditions, and ancestral uses of natural resources.
Return to the lodge.
Day 3:
After breakfast, departure to the observation tower located in the Napo River area. The 36-meter-high tower, located 20 minutes from the lodge, was opened to visitors in November 2004. Built with galvanized metal, it meets high standards of quality and safety.
From the top, a wooden platform built around a ceibo tree offers a magnificent 360-degree view. You can observe flocks of colorful tanagers, macaws, toucans, and other species active in the morning and before sunset.
There is another observation tower at the lodge near the dining area, offering views over the lagoon.
In the afternoon, visit the primary forest to explore its secrets: possibility of seeing lizards and even the pygmy marmoset.
After the walk, there is the possibility of exploring the lagoon and its small channels in search of giant otters, occasionally seen in this area.
Day 4:
Early departure and final navigation along the blackwater river to its confluence with the Napo River. Possibility of spotting giant otters and monkeys.
Arrival at the port, boat transfer, and continuation to the town of Coca (two hours).
The return flight from Coca to Quito will be scheduled according to the airline’s timetable.
